Design conditions

The vessel works for long periods in deep water far from shore. Salt-laden air, high humidity and wide swings in outdoor temperature all act on the environmental control plant. The air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation systems were therefore laid out together, around the ship’s working scenarios and the functions of each space, rather than as separate packages.

What JOSUN supplied

Air conditioning

  • A water-cooled chiller that cools and dehumidifies the cabins. It was chosen for its heat-rejection efficiency and small footprint.
  • An indirect-type air handling unit. All heat and moisture exchange takes place inside the unit, and the treated air is ducted to each air-conditioned cabin.
  • Cabinet-type air conditioners that give independent temperature control, with low noise, in specific areas.
  • Split air conditioners that supplement temperature control in individual spaces.

Refrigeration

Ventilation

How JOSUN lays out an offshore engineering vessel

The same article sets out how JOSUN arranges environmental control on this vessel type:

  • Upper module (accommodation). Cabins, offices and the mess are served by a medium-velocity, medium-pressure, single-duct central air conditioning system, air-cooled or water-cooled. The wheelhouse and galley have their own units, either CCU + AHU air-cooled split units or water-cooled packaged units. Provision refrigeration is also located in this area.
  • Hull. The engine control room and electrical workshop have high equipment heat loads and are served by independent water-cooled packaged units. The hull also has cabin ventilation and engine room ventilation systems.

JOSUN applies the same approach, with different equipment splits, on offshore platforms, FPSOs and offshore support vessels.

Delivery

The environmental control package was completed with the ship, and Offshore Oil 292 was delivered in Qidong. For other offshore projects that JOSUN has supplied, see the project list.
